How To Install AAC Blocks: A Step-By-Step Guide

AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) blocks are lightweight, durable, and eco-friendly building materials. The installation of AAC blocks requires proper planning and execution. It helps to ensure a successful construction project completion. Here is a step-by-step guide that will help you properly install AAC blocks, from preparing the foundation to finishing the walls.

Prepare the Foundation

It is necessary to prepare a solid base/foundation before laying the AAC blocks. You have to follow these steps to do so:

  • Clear the area of any debris, vegetation, or obstructions.
  • Excavate the soil to the required depth, ensuring proper drainage.
  • Use a plate compactor to create a stable base of soil.
  • Install a layer of geotextile fabric to prevent soil erosion and provide additional stability.
  • Finally, pour a layer of concrete to create a leveled foundation for your AAC block.

Plan the Layout

Next, you have to plan the layout of your wall. Measure the dimensions of your wall. Mark them on the foundation. Use a chalk line or a string to create reference lines for accurate alignment. Consider door and window openings, corners, and the position of electrical and plumbing fixtures.

Apply Mortar

Mix the mortar using the correct ratio of cement, sand, and water.

Apply a layer of mortar on the foundation, following the reference lines.

Use a trowel to spread the mortar evenly, creating a bed for the AAC blocks.

Leave spaces for vertical and horizontal reinforcement, such as steel bars or mesh, as specified by the structural engineer.

Place the AAC Blocks

Carefully place the AAC blocks on the mortar bed, starting at one corner.

Apply a thin layer of mortar on the top surface of each block before laying the next one.

Use a spirit-level tool to ensure that the blocks are level and plumb.

For corners and edges, cut the AAC blocks using a handsaw or a specialized AAC block cutter.

Continue placing the blocks, maintaining proper alignment, and ensuring that the joints are filled with mortar.

Fill the Joints and Reinforce

Once the AAC blocks are in place, fill the vertical and horizontal joints with mortar with the help of a pointing trowel. Ensure that the mortar is evenly distributed and tightly packed.

Install vertical and horizontal reinforcement, such as steel bars or mesh. This reinforcement provides additional strength to the AAC block wall/structure, especially in areas susceptible to seismic activity or high wind loads.

The Finishing of AAC Blocks

Once the mortar dries up, use a wire brush to remove excess mortar. Clean the surface of the AAC block wall. Apply a coat of water-based paint or a render finish to protect the blocks from moisture and enhance their appearance.

If you wish, you can also apply plaster or render to achieve a smooth finish. Allow the finish to dry completely before proceeding with further construction or interior finishes.

When you follow these steps, you can enjoy a smooth, hassle-free, and successful AAC block installation process.
